Legend of the thistle

Heather and thistle are the two most representative plants in Scotland, and although the first covers more than 800,000 m2 of the island is the thistle the national emblem of Scotland.

Why did such a proud people as the Scot choose such a simple plant as a national symbol? In fact, it is not known, but as it could not be otherwise there is a legend on the subject.

According to legend, in the 10th century and under the reign of Malcolm I of Scotland, the Normans intended to invade the country. To achieve this they devised a strategy: they would attack the Scottish army taking advantage of the darkness of night, and thus be able to secure a quick and easy victory while they slept.

However, one of the invaders made the mistake of walking barefoot, in an attempt to make as little noise as possible. As he approached the Scottish army, this man stepped on a thistle, causing him such terrible pain that he could not contain a deep cry that alerted the Scots to the position of the Normans. In the ensuing fighting the Scottish army defeated its enemies which prevented the invasion.

Then this plant that saved them from the invasion was known as "The Guardian Thistle". And it was not until the reign of James III that the thistle was recognized as the insignia of the Stuarts. And when James IV ascended the throne in 1488, the thistle had become a popular emblem and we can also find it in the ancient order of Scottish cavalry known as "The Order of the Thistle"
